Is there no place on this site where one can learn something about the history of Addison Co. and the towns in it? I can't find it if it's here.

Actually you found it! With Smith's History of Addison County available on line from Middlebury College (first link in the post above) there is no reason to duplicate efforts. Let me know if you have trouble using the Middlebury pages...but they do have the entire book available at their site.
